Samoan Fa’aaloalo! 

Territorial Commander Commissioner Janine Donaldson was warmly welcomed during her five-day visit to Apia from 13–17 August. Her time in Samoa was marked by heartfelt hospitality, spiritual connection and cultural celebration.

A formal welcome was held at The Salvation Army Samoa Regional Headquarters, attended by staff, officers, Apia Corps members and community partners. A highlight of the occasion was a cultural greeting delivered by Apia Corps member Tuala Maranata Su’a (High Chief) and female matai. This was a significant moment, as traditional protocol typically calls for a male orator to speak. However, with full cultural consideration and strong community support, it was deemed especially fitting for Tuala Maranata to welcome the first female territorial commander to the Samoa Region. Regional Leaders Captains Eric and Julie Turner described the moment as both historic and deeply meaningful. 

‘Samoa is so much more than a beautiful place,’ said Janine. ‘‘Samoa is so much more than a beautiful place! As we gathered together in worship, I was reminded that we are all part of something bigger. There was a sense of spiritual harmony, and I valued the heartfelt singing and vibrant prayer, as well as the deep reverence for God that goes beyond language. Samoan hospitality, fa’aaloalo, is rooted in Christian values of love and respect and I sensed that strongly. What a blessing!’ 

During her visit, Janine spent time with the regional headquarters staff, observed the addiction programme Faletalatala group, and enjoyed an engaging session with the youth of Apia Corps. Saturday was set aside for fellowship and fun at Fiafia night, followed by a beautiful feast. 

‘On Sunday morning, Commissioner Janine shared a message from the Word of God and joined us in celebrating our Self-Denial Appeal offerings at Apia Corps,’ said Captain Julie Turner.
