Promotion to Glory

We have been advised of the promotion to Glory of Major Thelma Jacobsen on Saturday 29 July 2023 from Hutt Hospital, Lower Hutt, aged 86 years.

Thelma Ellen Jacobsen was born in Dannevirke on 2 May 1937. Thelma entered The Salvation Army Training College in 1959 from Dannevirke Corps as a cadet in the Pioneers session. Following her commissioning on 23 January 1960 with the rank of Pro-Lieutenant, Thelma was appointed as Assistant to Wellington Florence Booth Girls Home. In July 1960 Thelma was appointed as Assistant, Wellington Autumn Lodge Eventide. She was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Lieutenant and appointed as Assistant, Eltham Women’s Eventide, in January 1961. Whilst in this appointment Thelma was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in March 1963.

With promotion to the rank of Captain in January 1966, Thelma was appointed as Assistant, Christchurch Resthaven Eventide. In April 1969 Thelma was given two years leave to complete a two-year Community Nursing Course in Tauranga Hospital and on completion of her course in December 1970 was appointed Assistant, Auckland Resthaven Eventide. Appointments for Thelma followed as: Assistant, Wellington Residential Nursery (January 1972); Assistant, Wellington Resthaven Eventide, Island Bay (September 1974); Assistant, Upper Hutt Wallaceville Eventide (March 1975); and Matron, Auckland Epsom Lodge (April 1978). Promoted to the rank of Major, Thelma was then appointed as Assistant, Taupo Wharerangi Eventide Home (September 1980); Assistant, Auckland Browns Bay Maureen Plowman Eventide Home (March 1985); and Assistant, Napier Resthaven Eventide (May 1989). A change in ministry came for Thelma in July 1992, when appointed as Assistant to Wellington Community and Family Services, and it is from this appointment that Thelma entered retirement on 1 June 1997.

We honour Major Thelma Jacobsen for her 37 years of active service and 26 years of continued faithful service in retirement in the Upper Hutt Corps, with much love and commitment to her Lord and Saviour. Please uphold Thelma’s extended family in prayer at this time of grief and loss.

We have been advised that Doris Collett, the mother of Lt Colonel Lynette Hutson and grandmother of Envoy Collette Irwin, was promoted to Glory from Christchurch, on 17 August 2023. We ask you to uphold Lt Colonels Lynette and Ian Hutson and Envoys Collette and Stewart Irwin, along with other family members in your prayers during this time of grief and loss.

Bereavement

We have been advised that Julie Noakes, the mother of Major David Noakes and grandmother of Lieutenant Scott Noakes, passed away in Auckland, on Tuesday 1 August 2023.We ask you to uphold Majors David and Vyvyenne Noakes and Lieutenants Scott and Aimee Noakes in prayer, along with other family members, at this time of grief and loss.

We have been advised that Wesley Talakai, the son-in-law of Majors Malia and Sila Siufanga, passed away suddenly in a work-related accident in Auckland on Saturday 5 August 2023, aged 38 years. We ask you to uphold in prayer Majors Malia and Sila Siufanga, and their extended family at this time of grief and loss.

Change of Appointment

Effective immediately: Major Linda Bateman has been appointed as Internal Auditor of Territorial Headquarters – Strategy, Development and Risk. Please pray for Major Linda Bateman as she continues in her appointment.

Effective 18 March 2024: Captain Christopher Collings has been appointed as Principal, Booth College of Mission and Training Principal, School for Officer Training. Due to Captain Christopher being appointed to the International College for Officers in London at the start of 2024, he will not commence this role until March 2024, after his return to New Zealand.

We thank Majors David and Vyvyenne Noakes for their willingness and availability to provide ongoing cover for leadership at Booth College of Mission as required during this transition period. I know you will join me in praying God’s richest blessing upon Captain Christopher Collings as he prepares to assume his new appointment responsibilities.

Appointment in Retirement

Effective 19 August 2023: Major Perry Bray has been appointed as Mission Support Coach (part-time)-Central Division. Please pray for Major Perry Bray as he undertakes this appointment in retirement.

Retirement

Effective 19 August 2023: Major Perry Bray has retired. Major Bray will have completed 15 years, 8 months and 11 days of active service.  Perry and Annette entered the Booth College of Mission as cadets in the ‘God’s Fellow Workers’ in 2006.  Following their commissioning on 8 December 2007 Perry and Annette were appointed as Corps Officers, Westport Corps. This was followed in 2011 with the appointment as Corps Officers, Belfast Corps, with an additional appointment for Perry as Referral Officer to the ILU’s. In 2013 Perry and Annette were appointed as Corps Officers, Invercargill Corps, with an additional appointment for Perry as Director, Community Ministries Invercargill. In 2015 Perry was seconded to Nepal for 10 weeks, with other New Zealand Officers and salvationists from around the world, distributing food and setting up shelters for 11,000 families following their devasting earthquake.  January 2019 saw Perry and Annette appointed as Corps Officers, Wellington City Corps, followed by an appointment for Perry in September 2021 as the Assistant Secretary for Mission, Central Division. It is from this appointment that Perry enters retirement on Saturday 19 August 2023. It is with sincere thanks and appreciation that we honour Major Perry Bray his loyal, sincere, and faithful service to God as ‘His fellow worker’.  Major Annette Bray will continue in active service. Appointment in Retirement: Effective 19 August 2023: Major Perry Bray has been appointed as Mission Support Coach (part-time)-Central Division. Please pray for Major Perry Bray as he undertakes this appointment in retirement.

Resignation

Effective 2 September 2023: The Territorial Commander announces with regret the resignation from officership of Captain Andrew Bright and the conclusion of Envoy service for Envoy Lynda Bright. Andrew Bright was re-accepted into officership on 14 January 2019 with the rank of Captain, and was appointed as Territorial Business Analyst, Business Administration Section at Territorial Headquarters. On 9 January 2020 Lynda Bright commenced Envoy Service, and was appointed Assistant Corps Leader, Timaru Corps, alongside Captain Andrew Bright, who was appointed as Corps Officer, Timaru Corps and Director, Timaru Community Ministries. We thank Captain Andrew and Envoy Lynda Bright for their faithful service and pray God’s blessing on them and their family in the days ahead.

Conclusion of Officership

Effective 17 August 2023: We advise that the officership of Major Alison Moody has been concluded.Majors Alison and David Moody were commissioned on 11 December 1993. They have served as the Corps Officers at Paremata, Taupo, Kelvin Grove and Hastings Corps. Alison has also held appointments as: Divisional Youth and Candidates Secretary and Divisional Guide Organiser, Northern Division; Divisional Youth Secretary and Divisional Candidates Secretary, Southern Division; and Territorial Women’s Ministries Coordinator and Divisional Secretary for Women’s Ministries, Central Division. We thank Major Alison Moody for her 29 years and 8 months of active service. Major David Moody will remain in his appointment as Keeping Children Safe Secretary, THQ-Personnel Section, as a Single Spouse Officer. Please uphold Alison and David Moody and family in your prayers.
